The Dr. Who Sci-Fi Series & DW Audio Books Collection: Some History
If you have lived in 1 of the most dominant English speaking countries it will have been pretty hard for you to of not, at the very least, heard of the Sci-Fi series DW! Now that Dr. Who is back on television since 2005 after it’s fifteen year pause the series has gotten considerably well known all over again, so mush so in fact that even the Science fiction channel has taken an interest in the TV series.
Thanks to the new serial Doctor Who is currently officially the longest running Science fiction serial ever with the first episode broadcasted by the BBC on November the twenty third 1963, an episode in which the Dr. & his friends voyaged back one hundred thousand years into Earth’s past to aid some somewhat unintelligent cavemen so that they could make the discovery of fire. The second longest running Science fiction series is Star Trek which started back in nineteen sixty thee, but does not presently have any new episodes in production.
With the huge popularity of Doctor Who, the BBC started producing Dr. Who Audio back in the mid 70s on cassette and LP. When it all started the BBC only created soundtracks from the original series & then had the Drs of the time add some binding narration to unify the dialog for the listener. It wasn’t long before the BBC decided to take the audio releases to the next level by releasing audio book episodes only for Audio release.
In addition the Doctor Who Audiobook family was expanded with the release of Audiobooks from episodes that had solely appeared on the radio. Another great use the BBC have found for audio with DW is the re-creation of old episodes that had been lost. At the time of writing the BBC’s Audio collection currently stands at over 50 titles. The range spans all the way though the first Doctor right up until the present Doctor, David Tennant. In addition Torchwood Audio and Sarah Jane Audio have also been added in recent times.
On our planet today audio is even more popular than ever thanks to MP3 players. With multitasking becoming more and more an important part of our lives it’s not surprising that Audiobook sales for both DW and in general have augmented. Another great factor about audio titles is that they are in many cases narrated by their original actors, which really adds to the whole experience. Mothers and fathers also buy them for children entertainment in cars etcetera.
With the Doctor Who New serial going from strength to strength and more and more Audiobooks being created available both from the old & new show and now from Torchwood & The Sarah Jane Adventures as well, it looks like DW and DW Audio Books are here to stay for some time to come!
